15-19 May 2012: Our 1st Post Transplant Vacation

A whirlwind vacation, heading out from Baltimore, Maryland to Cathlamet, Washington to meet my donor and returning via Estes Park, Colorado.

As a treat for ourselves this year, we purchased season tickets for brunch and shows at the Historic Dupont Hotel in Wilmington, Delaware. We got a pair of extra tickets for each so we could enjoy the company of our friends. We saw Blast! with our friends, Dave and Sherry.

The cupboards and counter now wrap around into the dining room, lots more space. We love the natural cherry, offset by the sparkly black galaxy granite counters, drawer pulls, and door handles.

It kind of looks like a ship's galley now. I'm excited about the new induction range. We don't cook a lot but the technology is very cool, ha ha. I wanted a counter depth refrigerator, too, but didn't want to end up with less interior space for lots more money - no cool new technology to tempt me there.

I found a great website with reasonably priced wigs and decided to give it a try. I love the style and color. It's from the Raquel Welch line, is called "Winner" and it comes in size petite, a perfect fit. I'm going to try it in more colors.

There was a "buy a wig and get this one free" special at Vogue Wigs when I purchased my summer hair. I dubbed it my "Loretta Lynn" wig. Actually, this photo was taken afer I had the bangs trimmed a bit, more to my preferred style. But I still can't get used to the curls.

After receving the devastating news about my base of tongue cancer, we decided to take our minds and bodies elsewhere for a weekend to visit our friend Thomas at Penn State in Erie, Pa. Thomas and I made good use of the abundance of small flat stones on the beach.

Happy 28th Anniversary to Michael and me - at Hopkins, awaiting the robotic surgery on my tongue.

Immediately following my robotic surgery, I was feeling great - sipping an Italian ice, talking, happy. Unfortunately, I started to bleed profusely a few hours later and was rushed back into surgery.

The morning after. I was stunned at the havoc wreaked by my post op bleed the night before. They told me the bleed is quite uncommon, occuring in less than 4% of patients. I'm grateful for the calm, rapid, and skilled response of my medical team. I had the breathing tube removed shortly after this photo but it took a long time for the swelling on my tongue to go down.

After only a few hours at home, I ended up back at Johns Hopkins via the Upper Chesapeake ER. I was eating pudding and started bleeding again. We called 911 and Hopkins. Fortunately, the bleeding was mostly stopped by the time the ambulance arrived but I was readmitted on the side of caution. A second bleed like this post surgery is extremely rare. Lucky me. I wish I'd win the lottery instead!

Out of the ICU. Hopkins has a nice food system now, a restaurant-like menu from which one can order throughout the day. I was restricted to "clear liquids" (including broth, jello, pudding, and ice cream) but I had to take such tiny bites and swallow with such difficulty, eating was a struggle.
